The back of my ribbed pullover is finally off the needles, however, I want to solicit some advice from all the experts out there. While I've been binding off for armhole decreases and shoulder edges, is there a way to avoid that stair-step look? I consider myself an advanced beginner, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've never read any technique regarding this...I think it will probably be fine regardless because these edges will all be inside of seams. Let me know what you think.
Casting on for the front!

When you're binding off stitches, instead of knitting the first stitch, just slip it, then knit the next stitch and pull the slipped stitch over like regular binding off. Continue to bind off normally for the remainder of the stitches. Slipping that first one lets it sort of connect the two "steps" of bound off stitches.
Posted by: alison at November 17, 2003 06:45 AMI did a ribbed pullover last summer from Rowan 29 called Moonbeam. The ribs were cast off three stitches in, using basically the technique Alison describes above. The edges were smooth, and the outside rib edge continued up the edge of the piece, which was nicer than having all the ribs cut off as the shaping decreased. Does this make sense? email me at ann@masondixonknitting.com if you'd like to see a photo!
